We had such a fun day! We swapped classes and played math games (Time Bingo, Tic-tac-toe 15, Salute, etc.). The kids had to eat a mystery candy that made them shrink to fit through each classroom door. We ate a delicious Mad Hatter snack and watched Alice in Wonderland during Free Friday time & recess.
This is the coolest trick! We used pipettes to drop water on pennies and in cups. Look how the water molecules stick together to form a "skin" that keeps the water from flowing over. If you add a few drops of soap to the water, it won't work! It was interesting to ask the kids if beans, rice, baking soda, and shaving cream were solids or liquids and to hear the reasons behind their answers. We played around with shaving cream and noticed that it takes the shape of its container yet it will disappear when rubbed in your hands or left out over night. We had a lot of fun experimenting with gases by blowing bubbles, catching/holding bubbles, and making bubbles with baking soda/vinegar and alkaseltzer/vinegar. The kids studied liquids to identify their properties (color, viscosity, bubbly, foamy, transparent/translucent, etc.). |
